The Clean Power Hub: Scaling Global Capacity on the Transition to Cleaner Power Systems
CIFF jointly with ClimateWorks Foundation is supporting an innovative new platform to accelerate clean power technical assistance. The Clean Power Hub speeds clean power capacity development through practical, action-oriented guidance and expert support to power sector practitioners working to integrate larger and larger shares of renewable energy.
The global transition to cleaner power systems is possible. Renewable energy technologies are cheaper than fossil fuels, political will is rising, and we have developed, tested and proven the regulatory, policy, and operational approaches needed to integrate large shares of renewable energy into power systems safely, reliably and cost-effectively. The challenge is in sharing all of this know-how with power sector professionals all over the world, and building their capacity to act on it.
But time isn’t on our side—every day the window to avoid catastrophic climate change narrows. To succeed, we need to share clean power know-how with far greater speed and reach. Global power sector capacity on the transition to clean power systems needs to scale.
The Clean Power Hub is an innovative new platform to enable broader, faster sharing of know-how on clean power. The Clean Power Hub leverages the expertise and know-how of the world’s leading clean power technical assistance and capacity development institutions, and amplifies it using the state of the art in online learning and skill-development.
Sonia Medina, Executive Director, Climate Change, CIFF: “The rapid transition to clean power around the world is essential if we are to tackle climate change and deliver public benefits such as air quality. The Clean Power Hub will ensure that the practical tools and steps needed to radically increase the share of renewable electricity in a country are available and accessible to all those who need them, supporting action and accelerating the transition with the aim of creating a climate safe future for children.”
The Clean Power Hub focuses on defining and streamlining the work that power sector professionals need to do to transition to cleaner power systems, and provides free, easy-to-follow, practical guides on how to get that work done. Throughout these guides, the Clean Power Hub gives its users free access to models, tools, executive education offerings, peer-to-peer communities, and expert consulting services that enable the next step.
Fabby Tumiwa of the institute for Essential Services Reform, a leading Indonesian think tank supporting the clean energy transition: “The Clean Power Hub is an excellent, practical new tool. We expect to use the Clean Power Hub to help educate our partners, and our own staff, on the work needed to build a resilient, low carbon energy system.”
This focus on helping practitioners do the work of the clean power transition, and directing them to the resources that advance rather than merely inform that work, that is the greatest point of differentiation between the Clean Power Hub and similar resources:
the Clean Power Hub is not a knowledge hub, it’s an action hub.
The Clean Power Hub’s approach is extendible to a variety of climate- and clean energy-related issues but, for now, it is focused exclusively on supporting efforts to integrate larger shares of cost-effective renewable energy resources into power systems. Also, while much of the Hub and its content is globally relevant, its initial geographic focus – in terms of marketing, partnership development and user support will cover all the emerging economies CIFF works including Southeast Asia, Africa and Latin America.
We encourage all those power sector professionals to use this platform to learn and further develop their expertise in clean power transition. You can access the Hub in the link below, and learn more about CIFF’s funding of the Power Hub here:
