China

Building on several years of engagement with Chinese partners on climate programming, CIFF opened an office in Beijing in 2019. CIFF’s work in China focuses exclusively on climate, and the Chinese Government’s increased focus on addressing climate change has offered a real opportunity for CIFF to support impact and climate progress in the region.

CIFF’s work in China aims to support an accelerated transition towards sustainable development and a low-carbon economy. Our China portfolio spans across energy, industrial and economic transition; sustainable cities and low-carbon transport; air quality management; carbon pricing and green finance; climate and environmental governance; green development of the Belt and Road Initiative; and low-carbon and climate communications.

CIFF’s China strategy follows the overarching CIFF objective of ensuring local organisations and experts are supported, and our localised approach includes efforts such as a deep dive into key provinces on energy transition in China. We are working closely with international and increasingly local expertise that can bring a comprehensive suite of high impact climate solutions to China’s policy and decision makers at national, provincial and city levels. This includes international NGOs such as Energy Foundation China – one of our strategic grantees that has been serving as a re-granter, facilitator, and strategic advisor in China for over 20 years, and domestic think tanks such as the China National Renewable Energy Centre which provides scientifically-sound, evidence-based recommendations for an accelerated low-carbon transition in China’s energy system with a focus on power sector.
