New Executive Director for Health
Alvaro Bermejo to lead Health Team
We are delighted to announce that Alvaro Bermejo will join the Children’s Investment Fund Foundation as Executive Director for Health.
Currently, the Executive Director of the International HIV/AIDS Alliance, he will start his new role on 1 December, 2015.
Alvaro is a respected leader in global public health who has helped shape the agenda on HIV/AIDS to create stronger links with reproductive health and public health systems. Over the past 12 years, he has grown the HIV/AIDS Alliance from a niche player in the AIDS response, to the main organisation supporting community responses to HIV, health and Human Rights.
Translating strategy into high impact programmes driven by evidence and data is one of his many strengths. The HIV/AIDS Alliance was the first International NGO to publish data following IATI standards (International Aid Transparency Initiative) and was credited by the UK’s Department for International Development to be a leader in value for money.
Before joining the Alliance, Alvaro was the Director for health programmes at the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in Geneva where his responsibilities included developing health related policy, providing advice to the health portfolio and leading a team of around 90 health professionals. Child survival and adolescent reproductive health were central to his work there.
Alvaro is a trained clinician, with a degree in public health from the University of Leeds, and has held field positions in primary health care programmes in both Bolivia and Nicaragua.
