Child Survival - Overview
Source: WHO, World Health Statistics 20078

Definition:

Deaths among children aged 28 days to 5 years.

Transformative Goal:

Quantum reduction in under-five morbidity and mortality

Defining the Global Challenge

  • Despite a 27% global decline in child mortality rates over the last decade, 1 9.7 million children per year still die before the age of five 2. Over half of these deaths occur in Africa, 3 while India accounts for more than 2 million annual deaths, more than any other single country. 2
  • The great majority of under five deaths are due to preventable diseases that are rarely fatal in the developed world. More than 90% of global mortality among children under 18 occurs before the age of five years. 5
  • 38% of total under-five deaths occur in the neonatal period, with 75% of these deaths occurring in the first week of life.4
  • Maternal mortality is a major contributing factor to child mortality, increasing a child’s likelihood of death within two years of his/her mother’s death by ten times.6
